What's inside a mattress can spell the difference between waking up refreshed everyday and having rough days and sleepless nights. Get an inside view on the many types of mattresses below:
Latex mattress: solidified latex creates rubber, and come mainly as a product of two curing processes: Talalay and Dunlop. Talalay curing uses less rubber, filled out with equally distributed air to create padded cells that are frozen into a stable form. Talalay processed latex offers a wider range of firmness options. The Dunlop process fills out most of the mattress structure with rubber, resulting in a more solid product.
A latex mattress from natural rubber can be made with a minimum of other chemicals, making it biodegradable.
Foam mattress: a space-age material, memory foam reacts with your body heat to contour itself around your sleeping position. This instantly solves the question of lumbar support (keeping your spine's alignment in good hands). Memory foam used to be out of reach for most budgets until mass manufacturers intorduced innovations in its making. A cheaper alternative to a bed mattress is the slip-on foam mattress pad.
Foam mattresses may have an underlying set of springs that provide a basic supporting function, contained in a box and kept in tension by the mattresses' upper layers.
Air mattress: inflatable and useful as a floatation device, an air mattress is easy to store and are perfect for emergency guests and travelling. They're made from reinforced plastic and/or polyurethane rubber layers. A more permament version, the air bed, has stronger valves to keep in the pumped air longer and comes in standard sizes.
Sophisticated versions of the air mattress have adjustable pressure levels for comfort, separate cells that can accommodate desired sleeping postures and high-end materials on the cover for a plush sleeping surface.
Water beds: a vinyl membrane keeps in the water, which gives a surface that yields to body weight easily and is heatable for cold weather. Water beds are easy to keep clean and repair with a vinyl patch kit. Before the invention of memory foam pads, water beds were prescribed for people prone to bed sores and arthritic joints.
Spring mattress: a coil mechanism provides most of the support, with a foam layer on top to provide comfortable contact. Spring mattresses range in shape and coiling method, which results in different supporting effects.
